As part of Gillingham Town Centre Regeneration Action Group (RAG), ‘The Meadow’ which is situated in the town centre was identified as a way to smarten up the town and inject some life into Gillingham.
The Meadow is owned by Blandford based family brewer, Hall & Woodhouse, who have given the Town Council a 25 year lease with a rent of £1 per annum as well as awarding £1500 from their Community Chest to start off the fund raising to convert the current Meadow into what the Town requires. The Council have successfully raised £5000 it total.
“We are delighted to have given Gillingham Town this meadow. We think it is a fantastic way to rejuvenate the town and to give the local residents a place to enjoy. The Meadow is part of the land which our public house, The Red Lion is situated on. Having the Meadow will certainly enhance the open space available in the town centre. I’m sure this will be greatly appreciated by the local residents.” Hall & Woodhouse Chairman Mark Woodhouse comments.
The plans are to put a hard surface path and ramp from Waitrose bridge to the High Street, and to open up the High Street to have access to the meadow. There will also be plans and shurbs planted. In the future the Council would like to strengthen parts of the Meadow to ensure is can withstand heavy usage for fairs or festivals (without damaging the land).
